About
Barker ART! studioS
ART! has been at the core of my life since I was 6 when I drew a portrait of my cousin for a Christmas gift. Over the past sixty years I've worked with paper, paint, clay, glass, ceramics, silk screen, jewelry, plush toys, soft dolls, and handbags; graphic design & manufacturing; drawing, commercial merchandising, interior design, and house painting. These diverse experiences have taught me to attend to the smallest details, execute craftsmanship with precision and a focus on quality on every project, and complete high-pressure tasks on a tight schedule.

Our journey with quilting began in 2000 when we randomly took our worn-out jeans, cut them up into pieces, and decided to make a quilt to give to a niece as a wedding gift. To our surprise we had a lot of fun working together and very happy with the outcome. We created a family heirloom that has already withstood nearly 25 years of frequent use!
In 2018 I retired early from teaching to be my father's caregiver until he passed away from Alzheimer's. To save my sanity from the exhausting nature of his care, our accountant suggested we start a business. The only idea we both came up with was remembering how much we enjoyed working on making that quilt years before. Next thing we know our accountant set us up in business and we're making dozens more quilts and selling them by word-of-mouth to friends and relatives all over!
After another 5 years, increasing orders motivated us to find ways to speed up our quilting process. We promised a gallery owner that we would participate in a fiber art show in Fall of 2023 and was told we would need to have enough work to fill up the gallery. With a short time frame to finish a dozen quilts, necessity led us to look for and find our beautiful 14 foot-long Bernina Berta, a Bernina Q24 longarm sewing machine, with QMatic digital sewing system! After a delayed delivery, intense training, and a race to get all the quilt tops completed in time, we made it! The gallery show was successful in getting better known locally and now we're looking for more ways to keep our beautiful, efficient and capable new machine busy. (Video Tour)
